Checking in to the Westin in Wheeling IL for a single night’s stay when we had reserved a Traditional room at 350 square feet, my husband jokingly asked the host, “Are you going to give us the Wheeling Suite?†As it turned out, there was indeed a Wheeling Suite, and the host gave us that room!

On the way up to the 15th floor, I had no idea what to expect. After putting the key in the door, I was welcomed by a large living room with plenty of windows, and couches for entertaining.

A cozy throw was draped over the back of one of the couches, and there were several real plants throughout the suite.

There was a TV with some good Bose speakers and a subwoofer.

A table centerpiece gave a nod to the nearby Des Plaines river.

Velvety soft chairs were arranged under some local artwork.

There was a dining room with seating for six at the table, with a large wraparound balcony. just outside. Two levels of drapes were offered, an opaque covering and then some solid light blocking ones in front of that.

It was too bad we were only staying for one night, as it was a pretty cool suite!

Through a doorway was a separate pantry, with tons of cabinet space.

There were a couple bottles of free water, and a coffeemaker with Starbucks coffee.

Fridge

An empty wine fridge was ready to hold plenty of bottles.

There were coffee table style books around the suite, and plenty of storage areas.

IMG_8843

The lighting was well-placed too, offering just enough so there were no dim corners but not flooding the areas.

I discovered not one, but two bathrooms. The separate showers had dual showerheads, and there was plenty of room.

A sunken tub was great for a bath.

There were even fresh flowers in the bathroom.

The size of the suite was about 1300 square feet, and though I didn’t try breakfast the next morning or go to the Club Lounge my stay was great. It was an unexpected surprise to get the suite, and even though I know I probably wouldn’t get that room next time I would stay at this property again.

  1. That’s sort of annoying because I stayed there one night late July and am a 100+ night Platinum and got….a boring king bed room. No recognition from the staff and nothing special.

    1. I think the reason for our upgrade was that the hotel had very low occupancy at the time, but I would have been annoyed in your position too Nick!
