Hotel Review: St Regis San Francisco Astor Suite
On a trip back from Asia, I needed a hotel room in San Francisco for one night before my connecting flight so I chose the St Regis and used a confirmed suite upgrade on a cash & points stay. Arriving early around noon, the hostess was courteous but said the room was not ready yet. She expected to have it ready soon though, and said she’d call me shortly. I happily took a seat in the lobby area and munched on some nuts while waiting. There were deep colored velvety couches and a long fireplace which made it a comfortable place to get caught up on some email.
I realized that quite a bit of time had passed and I hadn’t been called yet. I went back up to the front desk to inquire, and they said it wasn’t time yet. I went back to the couches, and on the way back I realized how tired I was. Thankfully the hostess came by soon thereafter with a big smile and said that the room was ready.
I was given the key to an Astor Suite on the 18th floor. I had stayed at the hotel before but this was the first time that I had been given a room on such a high floor! I was curious what the difference in the view would be.
The great floor to ceiling windows were the first thing I saw, and the dark fumed-oak floors were clean and sleek. A desk was set up against a windowed corner so I’d have a wonderfully distracting view while working.
The leather topped desk had two phones, a touchscreen system and plenty of workspace.
Two complimentary bottles of water waited on a silver platter at the edge of the desk.
There were pens, scratch paper, the hotel’s book and some brochures.
There was a desk lamp that had an easy to use switch.
The couch was mohair and silk with some nice squashy pillows and a coffee table.
A few of the pillows were stained with white and dark splotches. I scratched a bit at one with my fingernail and when it came off easily I decided not to have a seat in that area.
Up close, one of the tables looked like it could have used a protective cover since it had gotten deeply scratched up.
Overall, the sitting room felt more like an upscale residence than a hotel room.
A 42 inch plasma TV was at just the right height for watching, though I didn’t use it.
Instead I was interested in the view. I could see all the way down to the water and beyond. That was admittedly pretty cool! From the 18th floor the cars looked like little toys, and I also enjoyed watching the clouds roll by.
A beautiful arrangement of orchids enjoyed the view as well.
The bathroom had a walk in rain shower with separate hand held shower. There were Remede bath amenities.
The bathroom had a swiveling TV, double sinks, a magnifying mirror, and plenty of big towels.
The bathtub was extra deep, great for soaking, and was surrounded by limestone walls and flooring.
On the bathtub was a large card that offered an extremely special tub menu. Ever wanted to have a bubbling pink Krug Rose bath full of fresh rose petals? They can do that with the Rose Petal Romance package, for the small sum of $950. Fancy a bit of caviar? The over-the-top Krug Ultimate Bath comes with four ounces of caviar and a Magnum of Krug. I chuckled a little and just went with the sensible option – a regular bubble bath.
Even the bedroom had big windows. The bedroom was decorated in soft colors and the sheets and duvet were luxurious.
The closet was set back so it was flush with the wall, and there was a leather bench that made suitcase unpacking easy.
Plenty of fluffy pillows, a soft headboard, convenient bedside lamps, and a great view from the bed rounded out the bedroom.
The bedroom had a separate 32 inch wall-mounted TV.
The wall had switches that controlled the lights and shades, so with the touch of a button I could make it a dark room ready for sleep.
I skipped breakfast in the morning, but when checking out I was asked if I wanted a paper at least for the flight home. I said yes, and was pleasantly surprised when they had my choice of newspapers right behind the desk. It was a great way to end the stay.
