Hotel Review: Renaissance Malmo Hotel, Sweden

I was visiting friends from the Bonusfeber community and the Renaissance Malmö was the perfect location for a single night’s stay.

They dropped me off right at the entrance to the hotel with no problem, and I wheeled my suitcase up the small ramp, straight to check-in. There was no one else in line so I was immediately greeted by two front desk agents. As I provided my credit card and verified my details, I turned around casually and saw a huge whimsical elephant statue which made me smile. The front desk area was bathed in a soft pink light which gave it a dream-like appearance. The agent explained that the lobby area is a sort of revolving art gallery where international and local artists display their work.

Pleasantries taken care of, I was given a key to room 254 and shown the way to the elevators. The Renaissance Malmö boasts the distinction of being the first Marriott hotel in Sweden, but it is also an older building so I had to take care to lift my suitcase over wooden frames in the hallway every now and then.

In the center of the hotel is a courtyard, so instead of dark and dingy hallways, they were colorful with a rose colored pattern on the carpet and bright with lots of sunlight from the large windows.

Looking for my room I found myself squinting at each of the doors, since the room number was right on the light but it wasn’t too long before I found mine.

I had been given a complimentary upgrade from a Deluxe to a Prestige room, and it felt quite roomy at around 355 square feet. I also loved the hardwood flooring and charming feel.

The wooden wardrobe was intricately carved and delicately designed.

Under the TV in the cabinet there was a minibar that thankfully wasn’t the weighted sort, along with some cups and glasses.

Against one of the walls was a desk with outlets.

There were more outlets by the bed too which I found very convenient, and even though the temperature in the room was just right there was a thermostat with instructions if I needed to use it.

The room’s position in the courtyard was more lengthwise than some of the other rooms which translated to mean lots of windows. They opened too and not just a few measly inches, so I could let in lots of fresh air from the outside easily. I loved the peaceful view, and many hotels don’t have windows that open so it was a treat to be able to do so here.

The bathroom was very clean and quite modern, with a large shower.

As a Platinum, when checking in I was given the option of 500 bonus points or a local amenity. I chose the amenity, which was brought to the room swiftly after I had settled in. The bottles held very cold water, which was great considering I had arrived hot and parched. I liked that they were eco-friendly, so once guests were done with them the hotel sterilized them and then reused. The cheeses and breads were delicious, and fresh. I was glad I had chosen the local amenity rather than the points.

When it was time for bed I pulled the heavy curtains and noticed that the tracks overlapped. This might seem like a small feature but it was definitely appreciated since the overlap took care of any stray streams of light.

The bed was luxuriously comfortable, more than I had expected. I’m not sure if the mattress was new or if it was just very good quality, but I sure slept great.

In the morning, a very good buffet breakfast was offered downstairs in the restaurant. I was also approached by a waiter who said if there was anything else I wanted to just let him know.

I thoroughly loved this hotel stay. The property was charming and had obviously been renovated with care to become more modern while still retaining the best parts of the older building. It was in a great location, and the customer service was outstanding. I felt welcomed, and the whole experience gave me the warm fuzzies. I would definitely stay here again.
