Hilton Hotels made an announcement last week that they’d stop offering on-demand porn in all of their hotels worldwide. This comes as welcome news to families as well as groups that have actively been fighting sexual exploitation, which is said to go hand-in-hand with pornography.

Here’s the official statement –

They join Ritz-Carlton andMarriott, Nordic Choice Hotels, and Omni Hotels in removing the channels.

Hilton’s top brass must have been feeling some pressure to remove the VoD (video on demand) porn, as they were reportedly receiving thousands of letters weekly condemning the videos.

While some hoteliers such as Omni made the decision early on in the 1990’s to pull the videos due to moral beliefs, Hilton hinted in their statement this month that the change may be due in part to something else. The fact remains that many people don’t use the TV as often as they do their personal computers.

Revenue from on-demand video purchases has steadily been declining in the last few years, including on-demand porn. Re-reading Hilton’s statement carefully, it does seem to gently guide users towards using their computers to stream porn instead. Do you think I am misinterpreting their statement?

  1. Well, if you didn’t know there are many things in the hotel room far dirtier than the remote. Check the floor, comforter, etc. Probably not a good idea to stay in a hotel if you are phobic. Doesn’t hurt to look for bed bugs though.

I have kids and the first thing I do is turn on parental controls. I’m not restricting them from watching TV because I’m not that controlling. When my wife and I travel alone we do enjoy some XXX videos but I will never pay those confiscatory prices. I understand the conservatives out there, to each their own. You can hook up a laptop or any other device via HDMI to the back of most of those TVs and enjoy what you will. This is also good for viewing vacation photos/videos.

  2. I can’t recall the last time I switched on a TV in a hotel room, it must be at least 10 years though. IMO they can remove the TV entirely. When I’m travelling with kids, the first thing I do is grab the probably filthy remote with a towel, and put it somewhere out of reach of my little people.

    1. I agree Vicente, those remotes are awfully dirty (and that’s just the stuff we can see!). I hardly ever use the TV either, since I travel with at least one iPad and a laptop computer. Wonder if hotel rooms will still have TV’s 20 years from now…
