Tis the season to give and get holiday cards. Even businesses get into the act, and when it comes to large companies with millions of members the cards are usually electronic and sometimes videos.

Click here to watch the one from American Airlines, which included a gentle reminder that a very important part of the holidays is spending less time on electronic devices and more time interacting with loved ones.

The one I got from Hyatt Gold Passport this morning was especially heartwarming. The video itself was pretty, showing snow softly falling on different cities around the world. After the video ended though, there was the holiday greeting. Along with well-wishes for the season, it said that Hyatt was making a donation on my behalf to Youth Career Initiative which helps disadvantaged youth explore their career choices –

Just about all big companies make contributions to charities but I really like how Hyatt has made giving back the focus of their message this year and made me feel like I was a part of it. Pretty cool, and I don’t think I’ve seen another company do quite the same.

To enter Magic of Miles’ contest today for a USPS box stuffed with travel-related goodies, leave a message on this post about Christmas cards. I’m curious who still sends out paper cards vs electronic, and have you given to a charity in someone’s name before? What do you think of Hyatt’s giving back holiday card?

The contest ends at 9pm PST tonight, and for full contest rules click here.

  1. I love to get cardsvin the mail. There is just something special about paper cards that you don’t get with email.

  2. Send a handful of paper cards every year. Also donate toys to a foundation that helps kids with cancer at our local hospitals. And give money to lots of environmental and animal groups at the end of the year as they get matching donations! Best time to do it!

  3. We don’t send cards, but do donate to charity in our children’s names, along with sending small personal gifts.

  4. I make a contribution to the New England Center for Arts & Technology on behalf of those I care about. NECAT helps those from disadvantaged backgrounds develop skills in the food service industry and then places them in restaurant and catering jobs throughout New England.

  10. We do not do the Christmas card thing…I always mean to but never get around to it. Instead of exchanging gifts, my family all puts a donation in a card and we deliver it to a family in need every year. I think Hyatt’s Giving-Back Card is great!

  11. I send out travel related photo cards each year. I have donated to a charity before on behalf of someone, but not for Christmas. I like Hyatt’s card and idea. My company does not send cards, electronic or paper, but due to our industry and client relationships it would not be expected.

  12. I still like to send paper cards during the holidays because it really has that personal touch. Sometimes if I have more time, I’ll even make my own.

  17. I still send out xmas cards even though it’s not environmentally friendly. E cards don’t seem as sincere. This year I asked my in laws to not buy me anything instead donate to my favorite dog rescue charity.

  18. I don’t send out paper Christmas cards anymore. I give to charity, but I haven’t given in someone’s name yet.

  19. Yes, I still send paper cards through the mail because I love receiving them! And yes, I do make charitable contributions in honor of loved ones, including my pets. I like to give it forward in honor of those who have given me so much.

  20. I still send out paper cards, but I do really like getting the travel-themed electronic ones from loyalty clubs – I’m a sucker for violins and pretty snow pictures. 🙂 I’ve never given to a charity in someone’s name before because I never know if the recipient will be happy with it or if they’ll be disappointed that they didn’t get a more tangible gift, but I might someday. If I did, I’d want it to be like Hyatt’s – the wording really makes the recipient feel like they were involved somehow and that’s just what I’d want.

  21. I don’t send out cards but i have given charity in someone’s name. I think hyatts giving back card is interesting.
