Hyatt has teamed up with Folio Fine Wine Partners for the fourth year to run a contest that offers $5,000 art school scholarships to four lucky students. Called the Canvas Artist Series Contest, it gives students the chance to use their creativity to design a wine label for Hyatt’s California wine Canvas varietals. In addition to the scholarship, winners will also get to see their labels on Canvas wine bottles starting in 2015 which is pretty cool.

Hyatt offers its guests five different Canvas varietals, four of which are part of the contest (excluding Merlot).

To enter, per the official contest website an original piece of artwork must be submitted that reflects “the contestant’s artistic interpretation of the varietal characteristics of one of the below Canvas Wines” –

In addition to the artwork, write a 100 word or less essay describing yourself and why you want to be an artist and a second essay explaining the inspiration behind your artwork.

Note that the essays cannot mention the drinking of alcohol, which sounds difficult when you’re discussing wine but I’m sure it can be done somehow.

The contest is open to students ages 18+ in the US that are enrolled in an accredited art program. Entries must be submitted by December 15, 2014.

Michael Mondavi, the founder of Folio Fine Wine Partners says, “The name Canvas represents an art of living, and also refers to the artisanal approach we took when making the wine. We are pleased to encourage students with the same passion and respect for art to create something unique, original, and long-lasting for our wines.â€

Here are the winners from 2013, whose artwork was displayed on special Canvas wine labels.

Here’s a link to the entry form.

I don’t particularly care for Hyatt’s Canvas wines but the contest is a great opportunity for students to get their artwork seen by the public, even if not chosen as winners of the scholarships. Once entries are made, the public will get to vote for their favorites before the judges make their final picks. Of course, the $5,000 scholarships and the chance to get your art displayed on wine bottles is outstanding.

Good luck to all those who are entering!
