I love visiting Portugal and think it is an overlooked gem in Europe.

Today, Starwood’s Luxury Collection Hotel & Resorts brand officially announced the reopening of Pine Cliffs Hotel (once known as the Sheraton Algarve Hotel) after 18 months of renovation, as well as the introduction of the new Pine Cliffs Ocean Suites. Also onsite are the Pine Cliffs Residences. The entire complex is located a couple hours south of Lisbon’s airport, along the Algarve coast.

If you are thinking of staying at one of these properties, there are 3 to choose from –

Pine Cliffs Hotels
Pine Cliffs Ocean Suites
Pine Cliffs Residences

The renovation of the Pine Cliffs Hotels was completed to the tune of $57 Million and included redone guestrooms and suites (there are 217 total) as well as public areas. The entire hotel was shut down for 18 months while the renovation took place. Traditional hand-painted tiles were added to the custom headboards in each room, and terracotta floors now line the resort. A 10,000 square foot spa and wellness center was added to the property as well. Rates for the hotel rooms start at $165 a night.

The Residences consist of apartment-like accommodations complete with kitchenettes, and are offered nightly or via timeshare Premier Club for longer stays.

Newly added are the Pine Cliffs Ocean Suites, which are comprised of 148 suites, one, and two bedroom apartments that come with butler service and access to the Pine Cliffs’ facilities. It is a separate building from the hotel, but appears to be an extension of the hotel offering more suites onsite. Rates start from $250 a night.

If you are comparing suites at the Pine Cliffs Hotels with the suites at the Pine Cliffs Ocean Suites, I found them to look pretty similar with one odd difference – Internet. The Pine Cliffs Hotels and Residences say that high speed internet is offered, whereas the Pine Cliffs Ocean Suites indicates that the internet isn’t wireless, but wired probably via ethernet cables in the room –

Where’s the wireless internet?

Hopefully this is just a misprint, since it would be extremely disappointing not to mention unusual for a brand new hotel not to offer it.

The resort has six swimming pools, a tennis academy, nine-hole golf course, gardens, shops, and 11 different restaurants.

All three types of properties in the complex are SPG Category 6 properties, requiring between 20,000 and 25,000 Starpoints for a free night.

Have you stayed at the Pine Cliffs properties, and would you return back?

    1. @Christian, 5 nights sounds like a relaxing holiday indeed! I talked with someone at the hotel that said the new Ocean Suites are slightly larger than the suites at the Hotel though they were initially supposed to be just the same to offer more suites on-property. I hope you have a wonderful stay and report back how you like it.
